Coaching

What is a life coach?

Coaches provide perspective, guidance, support, motivation, and accountability to help you identify and achieve specific goals, unblock potential and enhance your life. Coaches pull from lived experience, training and/or education to offer their clients a goal oriented, action focused approach that’s relatable and achievable.

What is confidence coaching?

Confidence is a belief in your own abilities, qualities and judgment. It can be ever-present in some areas of life, and completely lacking in others, and it can change over time. Confidence can be intentionally developed, and nurtured, over time, and coaching with an emphasis on confidence creates a personalized space for you to do just that.

Before we start moving, we have to know where we’re going. We’ll look at what you want, need and dream of, we’ll see where the blocks are, or were, and we’ll start to create a vision. Most importantly, we’ll create an authentic, values based roadmap to help guide you on your journey.

If you’re going to do this, you have to do it all the way. You will never hear me say that you just need to “stay positive”, or “fake it ‘til you make it”. There’s no room for toxic positivity here. Alignment means composing a harmony with all your parts and all the parts of your life.

While you’ll be taking action long before step three, this is where it becomes official. All of the unlearning, liberation and release of expectations makes way for you to truly show up to your life, believe in yourself and go for what you want.

In the most simple terms-

Therapy treats medical necessity. It provides effective, appropriate treatment for conditions which require interventions to address symptoms and improve quality of life. Just as Asthma may need medical intervention of medications, environmental adjustments and rehabilitation or follow up care, Major Depressive Disorder may need medical intervention of medications, psychotherapy, group or individual supports and follow up care. These diagnoses require intervention from a formally educated and oftentimes licensed healthcare provider who is held to the standards of law and their governing ethics board. A therapist can also be a coach.

Coaching does not work with medical necessity. Coaching provides structured support, guidance and motivation in the context of a client’s specific goals. It’s focus is on personal growth and development, maximizing potential and reaching desired outcomes. Coaches can be specifically trained to help clients overcome challenges and improve their lives, and can pull from lived experience, but are not required to have formal education, certification or licensing. Coaching does not offer therapeutic interventions.

How are coaching and therapy different?

How are coaching and therapy similar?

Therapy and coaching do have some things in common. Primarily, the overall goal for both is to help the client. Both can be offered individually or in group settings, and both require welcoming and strong interpersonal skills. Many of the topics addressed in therapy and coaching overlap. An easy example is stress management. A client could be working with a therapist to treat a diagnosis of Generalized Anxiety Disorder, while also working with a coach to improve productivity and advance in their career, both of course, will have an impact of stress.

As you may have guessed, so much of the education and training done by therapists is beneficial in coaching as well. This is where I get excited. As a professionally trained therapist, I have so much knowledge to share as a coach. The skills and techniques I’ve learned do not only benefit in cases of diagnosable, impairing health conditions, they can also help when you want to build on that strong foundation you have worked so hard for!

If you have more questions about the differences and similarities, and what it means for me to fulfill these roles, just ask!

Hummingbirds, while small and light, are capable of remarkably fast wing beats, which allow them to fly forwards, backwards and to hover, as they travel unbelievable distances.
